08 Feb 09 - Cadets brave the cold
Despite sub-zero temperatures, more than 60 cadets representing six squadrons from the northern part of the Central & East Yorkshire Wing of the Air Cadets turned out for the ATC Sunday Parade at Richmond. This was one of a number of parades being held in various locations throughout the Wing to commemorate the formation of the Air Cadets on the 5th February back in 1941.
Amongst these hardy characters braving both the cold and the challenging hills of Richmond were 19 boys and girls from 886 (City of Ripon) Squadron. Led by the Stockton squadron band, the cadets paraded firstly in the market square before marching to St. Mary’s church. Along the route the salute was taken by Group Captain MC Longstaff, the Station Commander at RAF Linton-on-Ouse.
At the church a commemoration service was conducted by the chaplain of 2040 (Richmond) Squadron. Afterwards the parade reformed in Frenchgate and marched back to the Town Hall where well-earned hot refreshments were served as snow began to fall. The cadets from the various Squadrons chatted to each other briefly about their recent activities then set off home before the snow began to settle.
