07 Jul 07 - New Cadets at School Gala
Ripon’s new cadets got their first public outing on Saturday at Boroughbridge High School’s 25th anniversary gala. The twelve junior cadets from 886 (OK, there was the number ‘58’ visible on the odd brassard or two, but if local squadrons can’t help each other from time to time, then aren’t we doing something wrong?).
Anyway, the twelve cadets from 886 attended the gala to man the squadron’s PR/Recruiting stall and give a little drill demonstration to the good people of Boroughbridge. The drill display, commanded by A/Sgt Andy Roberts and including commentary from Flt Lt Chris Crebbin, walked the onlookers through the stages of drill training in the ATC. Starting on static drill with some basic turns and saluting, it then moved on to marching drill with wheels, saluting on the march and turns. The display culminated in a short continuity routine, including an adaptation of the well known 'magic circle' sequence. This was a considerable achievement considering both how junior some of the cadets were and also the fact that they were unable to start rehearsing the routine until the morning of the gala
Although the gala itself was not particularly well attended, the display received a good reaction from the spectators that were there. Members of the public commented on how good the cadets looked and how well they marched together from such a short amount of practice.
Several of the cadets from 886 attend Boroughbridge High School.
Rumours of a video of the event are entirely founded.
