16 Mar 10 - RED ARROWS SIGN UP TO SUPPORT RIPON AIR CADET AUCTION

886 (City of Ripon) Squadron Air Training Corps has received a boost to their forthcoming Auction of Promises on Friday 19th March from the world famous RAF Aerobatic Team - the Red Arrows.

Among the promises the cadets received was one from BAE Systems Military Air Solutions. The company makes the Red Arrows’ distinctive bright red Hawk aircraft and offered to donate a picture book “The Red Arrows in Action” to be auctioned. The book arrived in Ripon this week, via RAF Scampton, home of the Red Arrows, where it has been signed by every member of the 2010 Red Arrows aerobatic team!

Cadet Sarah Owens, who opened the package, said: “This big parcel arrived on Tuesday and when I opened it I found a super Red Arrows book. Then I looked inside and saw that all the Red Arrows pilots have signed it – even the first ever female Red Arrow, Kirsty Moore.”

The Auction of Promises on Friday 19th March at 7pm is a fundraising and social event organised by 886 (City of Ripon) Squadron Air Training Corps and is open to all. The event aims to raise £1,000 for Squadron funds, in order to support cadets from the Ripon area aged 13-20, as they participate in a wide range of exciting activities that develop their potential and equip them with valuable skills for Service and civilian life. The proceeds of the auction will be used to buy radio communications and camping equipment for the cadets.

The signed Red Arrows book is one of 25 promises to be auctioned. Other auction lots include a trial flying lesson; a try scuba dive in Ripon Baths; a flight over Ripon and the Yorkshire Dales or for the less adventurous, a day pass to use the leisure facilities at Nidd Hall or a mini-facial from a qualified beauty therapist.

886 Squadron’s Commanding Officer, Flt. Lt. Chris Crebbin, says: “we would like to invite everyone in Ripon and the surrounding area to join us on Friday 19th March at 7pm in the ballroom of the Ripon Spa Hotel. Come and meet the cadets and adult volunteers, enjoy a drink at the bar and bid for some amazing lots in our fundraising auction. If you are interested in aviation you can’t afford to miss it! If you’d rather keep your feet firmly on the ground, there will be plenty of other auction lots for you to bid for.”

Entry is by auction catalogue costing £2, available on the door. For more information, or if you would like to donate a promise to be auctioned, please contact Gareth Owens of the 886 Squadron Civilian Committee on 01423 324463, e-mail: gareth@kirbyhill.org
